Dumbbells
I purchased the 50 lb REP Fitness hex dumbbells to replace my Troy VTX rubber hex dumbbells. The main reason for the switch was that I preferred a straight handle over the ergonomic handle on the Troy dumbbells.
When the dumbbells arrived, I was pleased to find that they had virtually no odor and only a minimal amount of oil on them. I knew they would be slightly longer than my Troy dumbbells, but I was surprised by how much larger the head diameter was. The REP 50 lb dumbbell heads are larger than my Troy VTX 60 lb dumbbells and only slightly smaller than my Troy 70 lb dumbbells.
This isn’t a major issue, but because the heads are wider, I won’t be able to fit as many dumbbells on my current rack if I eventually replace my entire set with REP dumbbells.
After comparing the two brands, I noticed a few differences. First, the quality control on my Troy dumbbells appears to be better. The knurling on the REP pair is inconsistent—one 50 lb dumbbell has noticeably more aggressive knurling than the other. Additionally, both dumbbells have a slight bulge at the ends of the heads. I assume this occurred during the manufacturing process when the rubber was compressed.
My only concern is whether these bulges could make the rubber more susceptible to cracking if the dumbbells are dropped over time. Fortunately, REP backs their dumbbells with a lifetime warranty, which provides some peace of mind.
Overall, I would still recommend these dumbbells. The straight handle is comfortable, and the overall build quality is good. I plan to purchase the 60 lb pair soon to see if the quality control is more consistent, as it’s possible the issues with my 50 lb pair were simply an isolated oversight. Once I receive the 60s, I’ll post an updated review with my findings.
