Custom fly rod consultation with Garland Thayer

Working with Garland on building my custom fly fishing rod was a very exciting process. We talked over the right length and weight, the type of cork grip I was looking for, the type of eyots, and of course the colors of the rod itself as well as the artful wrapping of thread tailored to your design choice. My inspiration for this rod was the passing of my mother last July. I was able to get both a phrase she always told me, as well as her signature (I brought in a document she had signed) laser printed onto my rod. To say this is special to me is a magnificent understatement. I am happy to say that my final product reveal and meeting with Garland led me to tears in Maine Fly Co. I was able to meet owner Jeff, who was also inspired by his late father in beginning the company, and I knew our dovetailing stories produced a fly rod beyond my expectations. This was 10 weeks ago. I have waited to post this review until after I came back from Montana and fishing the Madison River. To articulate the experience as best I can, it is simply the best fly rod I have ever cast with. The give in the medium action, the grip tailored to my hand, the casting itself -- all worked together to catch my first 20" rainbow trout, and then another one. . . and then another. While I am still "new" to fly fishing (a few years now), I know enough to be dangerous and write an objective review. Please reach out to this team of caring and skilled craftsmen and women to build a rod that will fish perfectly from Androscoggin to the Madison. Great experience

Really enjoyed working with the team at Maine Fly on building a 7wt and a 12wt rod. Excellent advice and suggestions on the details from handle size to guides to color schemes . Highly recommend if you are looking for a new rod.
