The Blackland Workshop Batch 002, overall, exceeded my expectations in terms of efficiency, though I would place it within the medium/low efficiency spectrum. In a direct comparison, I find it similar to the Blackland ERA on plate 4, although I notice a slight, almost imperceptible, greater blade exposure on the Batch 002.
When comparing it to other brands, such as the classic Merkur 34C HD, I would say the Merkur offers a slightly more efficient and smoother experience, being one of the razors I use and appreciate the most in my daily routine. In terms of performance, the Batch 002 sits between the Merkur 34C HD and the Mühle R89. It is a very comfortable razor to use, with a unique and innovative grip. The rectangular handle, unconventional as it is, proved to be surprisingly practical in several situations, in others, less intuitive. Even so, I learned to use it automatically, without having to think too much, and it has worked well.
While I believe this grip design does not replace the traditional style of safety razors, it is an interesting idea that demonstrates creativity and innovation. As a piece, it is well designed, and its craftsmanship reflects attention to detail. However, one aspect that could have been improved is the engraving of an individual serial number, rather than just "Batch002"—a touch that would have further enhanced the special character of this razor.
In summary, the Batch 002 is an intriguing and comfortable razor that combines functionality and innovation. Although it does not reach the top of the efficiency spectrum for me personally, it brings a fresh perspective to the world of safety razors. It can be used daily without any issues and is undoubtedly a remarkable addition to any enthusiast's collection.
