Perfekt!
The HMG DCF Flat Tarp is exactly what I want for ultralight trips — simple, reliable, and incredibly well thought out. It’s impressively light and packs down to almost nothing, which makes a big difference when you’re covering distance or trying to keep your setup minimal. Despite the low weight, it feels very strong and confidence-inspiring, even in rough weather. What I appreciate most is the versatility. It’s easy to pitch in different configurations depending on conditions, and it handles wind and rain really well when set up properly. Paired with a splash bivy, this becomes a near-perfect shelter system for UL travel — minimal, efficient, and more than capable for real-world use. If you value simplicity, low weight, and solid performance, this tarp delivers.

Hyperlite Flat Tarp
Good design with high quality execution. Subsequently purchased Hyperlite Ground Sheet. I chose Hyperlite Flat Tarp because when compared with 0.55 DCF, Dyneema indicates that 0.75 DCF has almost double the Tensile Strength (104 lb/in vs. 63 lb/in) and Puncture Resistance (3.1 lb vs. 1.8 lb). This may better protect against wear and tear. 075 DCF also has better water resistance (20,000 mm vs. 15,000mm). This is important as, due to circumstances or timing, it may not be possible to stake a tarp, and heavy storms can reach and exceed 20,000mm, lasting hours and days. The tradeoff is approximately 100g additional weight for a 8x10 tarp. My previous experience was Rab Siltarp and Ascent bivy as well as the predecessor bivy before buyout by Rab. Pros: Generally very good quality. Cons: Few. Eg., corner tie-out reinforcements have abrupt transition which concentrates stress and creates possible points of failure; however I don't expect other tarps to be better. It may be useful to examine laminate schedules for sail design. While it may not be cost-justifiable to undertake the same level of analysis, the overall concept may be useful: eg. unidirectional tapes in a radial pattern to avoid stress concentration. First night bivy with -5 C and 10 km/h wind. Flat Tarp feels and sounds strong. Very open. I can see the stars through the tarp. I feel confident in my choice of Hyperlite. Look forward to many more nights.
