The crossbow was an important weapon in medieval European warfare. Crossbows were already in use among the Greeks and Romans. The Latin text De Re Militari, by military historian Vegetius, mentions crossbows. The only surviving images of crossbows from Roman times come from Roman Gaul and show hunters.
