Thomas - White

I used to buy heavier, "dorkier," and highly comfortable Mephisto shoes decades ago in brown and black. I wore them almost every day of the year for walking to work, college teaching, and long hikes in the woods of Maine. They seemed indestructible; in fact, they are still sitting somewhere in the back of my closet looking almost new, and they are still great for rough hikes. Recently, I bought two pairs of the Mephisto Thomas model in white and navy—a modern, dressier update. However, after wearing the navy pair for a "test walk" through the rough streets of Cambridge, MA, before a vacation to Europe, I was quite disappointed. The soles had already taken quite a few bad hits. Because of this, I think I will end up bringing a sturdier brand of sneakers to Europe instead.
