Since moving into this home 27 years ago, I have replaced some wood posts twice. It doesn't matter if they are in concrete or just set with pounded dirt; they rot off at ground level. Then I found the Post Master metal posts at a Big Box store. Wow, they were expensive! When I found the same posts at Fence & Lumber, I was ecstatic, because they offer the same metal posts at a much better price than Big Box stores. When I arrived home, I discovered these posts snug into the same place as the former wooden posts. If the hole has concrete, these posts are slightly wider than cedar 4x4's and drive right through the "post mix concrete," replacing the rotted cedar post. They are solidly set, and I consider them the last posts I'll ever replace. One caveat, I could not find a manual post driver and did not want to buy a pneumatic driver, so I built one that fits these 3 5/8" wide posts using square tube from a salvage yard.

I like how versatile they are and strong. 9' with 3' feet in the ground. I'm hoping that the strong winds will not be a factor.
