Direct measurement of the pan surface is key

No translation or adjustment needed due to the type of pan, shiny or dull, etc. This offers direct contact with the metal surface to give a straight-up temperature reading. As easy as reading an outdoor thermometer.

Glad now can use a 25 cent coin.

this new one is better than the one I used daily for 10 years, but found the battery cover needing a 5 cent usa coin difficult and finally decided to replace the Therma pen which now uses a 25 cent coin. Big improvement, again use this daily

I'm definitely disappointed with the Pro-Surface Thermapen. It's slow to reacting to surface temperature. It take 5-10 seconds to get an accurate surface temperature. It's has no back light for the screen which makes it difficult to read. The screen must be viewed near straight on, as the screen distorts and darkens when viewed at any angle other then straight on. This means you have to lean down to view the screen when in use. It's definitely over-over priced. There are better alternatives. Thermoworks has some great products, but the Pro-Surface Thermapen is mediocre at best. I do not recommend.
