This may have been my favorite book in this series. I have been waiting for Eban and Darby’s story and it did not disappoint. The story weaves together exhilarating action, palpable tension, plot twists, mystery, suspense, and spicy romance with just the perfect amount of emotions in the middle of an unforgiving landscape. The chapters from the bad guy’s POV were the icing on the cake especially since it took me until almost the big reveal to guess their identity. Eban is a SSA FBI hostage negotiator. Darby is a PhD student in volcanology. They originally met months ago when Eban was part of the team that rescued Darby after she was kidnapped and brutally assaulted. They have built a strong friendship since the rescue but have not crossed the line into more despite Darby’s desire to do so. When Darby wakes up in a house with a murdered man and no recollection of what happened, she calls Eban who rushes to her side. Things get complicated when it becomes clear a serial killer is fixated on Darby. The journey to Eban and Darby’s HEA includes baggage unpacking and truth telling while trying to identify and evade a psychopath. Darby’s character with her past trauma was developed so well to be strong and capable despite her deep scars. I love these alpha males paired with smart capable woman who need loving more than they need rescuing. They make the best main characters.
