Material is pilling out of the box

It was time to replace my old leggings which I've loved and lived in for several years and I'm incredibly disappointed. The fabric was fuzzy and looked like it would pill when I pulled them out of the bag, but full of stupid brand-loyalty optimism, I washed them which only got the pilling started before I'd even worn them. My original pairs that are 4-5? years old, look better. Their material is smooth, has never even hinted at pilling. Girlfriend collective leggings aren't cheap, but they were worth it, ig that's over now.
