In the right guitar they can be awesome
The pickups were on sale and I decided to give them a go, as I have the Octane and it's an awesome sounding pickup. I received the pickups and having a feeling they'll be quite bass heavy I installed them on one of my bright sounding guitars and they sounded terrible, like having a fuzz pedal in front of your amp. Lowering them didn't really help and I almost immediately took them out of they guitar. I was really disappointed and left a review here which I don't see anymore giving 1 star. And for that guitar it's a 1 star pickup.
But I was itching to try them on another, even brighter sounding guitar that I really like but haven't been able to find the correct set after I've tried several pickups. The set I had was quite good sounding but I could never put thinner strings on or tune to E standard otherwise it sounded like a shrill mess. I wasn't expecting much but to my surprise they sound perfect for this guitar. Muscular but tight and powerful but with a lot of clarity. Not djent type clarity but comparable with the set that was in there. So for this guitar it takes 5 stars.
In conclusion, a great set for brighter sounding instruments and maybe baritone guitars that have a longer scale and will sound brighter. It might be 50-50 on a neutral sounding instrument and definitely avoid in more bass heavy or somewhat muddy sounding guitars. Maybe a 1K pot will help with that but bear that in mind.
I have another bright sounding instrument with a floating bridge that I'm considering getting another set. We'll see.
