Other than easy of manufacturing, is there any good reason for the slotted drive? None that I can think of. Unfortunately, they are still prevalent. The best we can do to cope with them is having bits and drivers which fit the fastener as perfectly as possible. This bit assortment really helps with this in the microbit category. Beyond having a great size assortment, they bits themselves are well-machined and marked, and the microbit holder is solid.

If you take good care of them, they will outlast you.

Accurately grinded, good wear resistance, tolerant to some degree of abuse/overstress.
