Solid product, less solid instructions and customer service
My new Yakima racks are generally very well made and I am pleased to have installed them on my vehicle. Unfortunately, Yakima’s written instructions and specifications were not exact and I had to basically re-install the racks. The specs I was given would mean the racks would just barely grip the rails on my SUV. (I've since learned from professional installers that this is normal--there's usually some play in the specs.) I tried to pass this concern along to customer service, and while I was "thanked" for my input, I got what I call the old IT treatment--"you don't know what you're doing. The specs are perfect. Your installation will nullify the warranty." This is NOT the response I was expecting for my effort to share a concern I had with the produce I just spend nearly $1000 on. I was willing to acknowledge that I could have been wrong, but the customer service rep made not such effort on their part. Of course, the latter was true--the specs are in fact just excellent estimates, at least according to the pros who actually install them. The pro at the certified dealer I spoke with informed me that my racks are securely installed: the rubber pads and clamps are “perfectly aligned and doing exactly what they need to do.” I would add that the plastic caps that cover the locking mechanism were not easy to attach and secure in place. They felt pretty flimsy, in fact.
