I'm a forever fan of Maxima and have been using it for years. It's probably not the finest (in diameter) on the market but I'm certain I have not missed a fish regardless. It's reliability is unquestionable and I like having it between me and the fly.

Back to Basics - For Good

Building your own leaders is not for everyone. All those different sizes of leader material and all those knots. Why bother when store bought leaders are so readily available. Perhaps it’s the desire to get back to first principles or maybe just the basics that our forefathers used so effectively. If you make your own species specific flies then why not your own leaders too? Whatever the motivation I found it a very satisfying experience. I used a selection of Maxima Ultragreen Leader Material to build a leader for stillwater application. Was it all worth it? From the very first cast I realised that the answer is a resounding ‘yes’! I was hopeful of an improvement but I never imagined how much better it would feel in the cast and perform in presenting the fly exactly where I wanted it - allowing for human error of course! Maxima Ultragreen has an excellent reputation in the fly fishing community, and now I understand why.
