I got a custom Timbuk2 messenger bag which doesn't come with a strap pad, and I quickly noticed the discomfort. Even carrying just a laptop and water bottle, the strap would dig into my neck. This strap pad made a huge difference. It's way more comfortable now, even with heavier loads. If your bag didn’t come with one, I highly recommend getting this. I dont know how it compares to the pad that comes with the standard Timbuk2 bags though.
