Roja Elysium Noir EDP
Elysium Noir is perhaps the boldest reinterpretation of the Elysium DNA to date. Rather than simply making Elysium darker or stronger, Roja and perfumer Antoine Cotton have taken the familiar fresh citrus signature and infused it with blackberry, leather, woods and incense to create something more sensual, textured and contemporary. The result is a fragrance that sits somewhere between luxury niche perfumery and the best modern blue fragrances—though executed with noticeably higher quality ingredients. The opening is immediately recognisable as Elysium, but only for a moment. Bright bergamot, lemon, mandarin and orange create the familiar sparkling freshness before aromatic lavender and geranium begin pulling the fragrance into darker territory. Unlike the original, where citrus remains the undisputed star, Noir quickly develops a richer and more masculine personality. The heart is where the fragrance earns its name. Blackberry is the defining note, adding a juicy yet refined fruitiness that feels sophisticated rather than sweet. Rose softens the composition without becoming floral, while the blackberry creates an addictive contrast against the fresh citrus. It’s an unusual combination that gives Noir far more depth than a typical fresh fragrance. Many early reviewers have described the blackberry as one of the standout features of the composition. As the fragrance settles, juniper berry, cypress, frankincense, sandalwood, patchouli, leather and Ambroxan create a smooth woody base with a subtle smoky edge. The leather is polished rather than rugged, while the incense adds sophistication without becoming church-like or overly resinous. The overall impression is of a modern gentleman’s fragrance—fresh enough for everyday wear but carrying enough darkness to work comfortably in the evening. Performance appears to be the most divisive aspect. Some reviewers report excellent projection and room-filling presence, while others experience more moderate longevity of around five to six hours. This suggests skin chemistry may play a significant role, although the composition itself is consistently praised for its smooth blending and quality. The biggest criticism surrounding Elysium Noir isn’t its quality—it’s its familiarity. Several reviewers compare it to premium designer fragrances such as Bleu de Chanel, Dior Sauvage or Parfums de Marly Percival. While those comparisons are understandable because of its fresh woody profile, Elysium Noir feels considerably more refined and luxurious than those fragrances. It doesn’t reinvent the genre, but it arguably perfects it. How it compares within the Elysium collection: - Elysium Parfum – Bright, sparkling citrus masterpiece with incredible refinement. - Elysium Parfum Cologne – The easiest daily wear with maximum versatility. - Elysium Eau Intense – Richer, greener and more aromatic with improved depth. - Elysium Noir – The darkest and most sensual interpretation, introducing blackberry, leather and incense while maintaining the unmistakable Elysium freshness. Rating: 8.5/10 Best for: Autumn, spring, cooler summer evenings and year-round signature wear Occasions: Date nights, office, dinners, business casual and evenings out Age range: 25+ Performance: 8/10 Uniqueness: 8/10 Compliment factor: 9.5/10 Verdict: Elysium Noir isn’t trying to replace the original Elysium—it offers a different mood. Where the original evokes endless blue skies, Mediterranean coastlines and effortless elegance, Noir shifts the scene to sunset. The citrus remains, but it’s now wrapped in juicy blackberry, smooth leather and smoky woods, creating a fragrance that feels richer, darker and undeniably more seductive. It may not satisfy those looking for a radical departure from the blue fragrance genre, but if you want one of the most polished and luxurious interpretations of that style, Elysium Noir delivers beautifully.
