Blacked out expiration date?

I haven’t tried the actual product yet, but it arrived with the expiration date blacked out which I find to be really sketchy. I can see some of the 2021, but cannot see the month as it was blacked out with what appears to be a black marker. Why would a company black out the expiration date unless it was already expired or very soon to be but wanted to get rid of the product anyway. It makes me not want to even try the product because I don’t know if it is expired or when it will be.
